POKOTABI / PLACES WORTH A DETOUR
オオノ餅店
Take away freshly wrapped, warm peanut daifuku, sweet potato-packed oni manju, and celebratory sekihan from Mochi Oono.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
At Mochi Oono, each order begins with freshly pounded mochi, shaped and wrapped around its filling on the spot. The peanut daifuku arrives with a gentle warmth you can feel through your palm. Soft, subtly sweet mochi balances the crunchy texture and sweet-salty notes of finely crushed peanuts inside. Because the dough itself keeps sugar to a minimum, the natural richness of the ingredients shines through—making it best savoured the moment it is handed to you.
Another signature item is the oni manju, a steamed cake densely packed with diced sweet potato, celebrated for its wholesome texture and gentle, natural sweetness. The counter regularly features classics such as salted bean daifuku and coarse sweet bean paste, alongside mochi rolled in ground sesame or coated in glossy glazes. On select days, batches of steamed red bean rice (sekihan) and seasoned glutinous rice (okowa) join the lineup, catering to both sweet and savoury cravings. In summer, mochi ice cream wrapped around vanilla rounds out the seasonal offerings.
The shop operates purely for takeout in an intimate space designed to welcome 1 group at a time. Customers can watch the artisan deftly portion and fill each confection while waiting their turn. Because every piece is assembled by hand with care, it helps to arrive with a little time to spare. Cashless payments, including major credit cards, are accepted, making this an easy stop to pick up freshly made Japanese sweets during a neighborhood stroll.
